Order a wedding cake

I ordered a wedding cake for my friend because she went back to Japan for 3weeks. She did not have enough time to order it. The following is correspondence between a dessert shop and me.

Dear Chikalicious,

My friends will throw a small wedding party on March 3rd and planning
to order a wedding cake. However they are going back to Japan from
January 28th to February 17th. When they come back, there are only two
weeks until the party. So instead of them, I would like to ask some
questions.

1. When should we place our order?
2. We would like to have a cake for 25 people. Is it possible to make
three tiers cake?
3. Is there a minimum order?
4. What kind of flavor or design can we choose? They want a very
simple design cake.

We would really appreciate it if you could answer these questions.
Thank you in advance,

Hiromi

We had a several conversation in email. Then I finalized my order and received final quote.

Hiromi-san--
$261.30 + delivery (if applicable)

Send deliv address for final pricing.

Thank you,

ChikaLicious Desserts

Dear ChikaLicious Desserts

I have a question, last time I asked the price, it was $190.53 for 25 guests. Considering of that, $261.30 seems a little bit expensive for 30 guests. Why is the price going up this much?
Here is the address to deliver:

Mr. Y' s Apartment
111 West 11th Street, Apt 1A
NYC, NY 10011

Thank you,

Hiromi

THE QUESTION

Hi, How much is the single-entry tourist visa application fee for X passport holder and Y passport holder? Do you accept personal check and to whom it should be made out to? We are visiting Turkey with two children, aged 4 and 6. Do they need to be present at the consulate for the visa application or can I submit their application for them?

It will be helpful if this information is online. Thank you.

THE ANSWER

Dear XXX,

The fee is Z$ for X and Y citizens for single entry. We accept cash or money order( not personel check). The Money order should be made out to D.

They don’t need to be present at the Consulate.  According to our regulation attached, your children are under 18 years old, you will submit a notarized written consent for their application. You and your husband will go to the Notary. Notary will prepare a letter which lets your children get visa and travel with you. Both of you will sign it in front of the Notary. You can come and apply for visa on behalf of your children.

 Regards,

Assignment Week 2

From: Jessica
To: Beisi Li

Subject: Women Deliver Chinese

Hi Beisi,

Thanks so much for helping out with this – it’s excellent!

When you get a chance, can you just quickly explain the difference between Traditional and Simplified Chinese (and who uses what)? Sorry! This is new territory for me.

Thanks again! Really appreciate your support on this.

Best,
Jessica

Hi Jessica,

Sorry for getting these back to you late.

For your question on Simplified and Traditional Chinese. So Chinese government simplified Chinese character in 1950s -1960s to increase literacy. So Chinese-speaking regions that were not under the jurisdiction of Chinese government, for example, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, didn’t go through this process, so they are still using traditional Chinese. So you would use the Traditional version to do outreach media in these regions. In terms of other Chinese-speaking Asian countries, for example, Singapore and Malaysia, they are promoting Simplified Chinese. Singapore now is using Simplified Chinese, while Malaysia is using both. But this reason I revised the note was because the translation was too bad. I guess it might be translated by Google.

Please let me know if there is any other question.

Thanks!
Beisi

Assignment email by hiromi

Dear Y,

About the therapy room’s interior, I made rough drawings and interior images. Please find attached file.

I use the existing sofa and put a side table at both ends of it and display vases which you already have. Also your clients can put their drinks on the tables. I put a console table against the north wall, so that you can use the table as your small desk.

On the floor, using tile carpet which is 35” x 35”, we can adjust them to the room and avoid around door space.

I talked Chris this morning and showed these drawings and images. He said the chair which you will use was probably different that you thought. He sent me a new image of a chair, so I will look for it.

If you have an art image which you would like to hang on the west wall, please email me.

This is all for now.
When you have time, please let me know what you think about it.

Sincerely,

 Hiromi

Week One Assignment - Email

K,

Attached are job descriptions for Communications Associate, Policy/Advocacy Associate, and Intern positions for GHS’ office in Beijing. When Feng was in NY last week, he had discussions with David and Victor about hiring for these positions and there was agreement to move ahead. Although the hiring will take place in Beijing, it would be great to get your thoughts on the position descriptions and recruitment.

There are a few things that Feng had flagged out before we started developing,

·         Degree requirement: Though we only ask for Bachelor’s degree for Associate at New York office, given the quite different higher education system, Feng and I feel requiring for Master’s degree would apply better to the context in China. And accordingly, I reduced the requirement for work experience to 1-2 years.

·         English Proficiency: As a test to the applicant’s English Proficiency, we won’t translate the job description into Chinese, and we will ask for a relatively long writing sample (3-5 page).

·         Standardized Test Score (English Proficiency): Feng and I have been discussing whether or not to ask the applicants to optionally include any scores they have received from those internationally acknowledged standardized English test scores, e.g. TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). Do you think this is a good idea? (I’ve included background about the tests below.)

Please let me know how you think. We could also set up a time to discuss it in details.

Thanks!
Beisi

·         TOEFL iBT: it is the internet-based TOEFL. It is still TOEFL but with difference scoring system, and people nowadays take this one instead of the traditional paper-based TOEFL. It is required for people who are applying for higher education in the U.S., Canada, and other English-speaking countries.
·         IELTS: the UK equivalence.
·         TOEIC: it is for workplace English communication specifically. So it is not as widely taken as TOEFL or IELTS, but people who are interested in jobs with international organizations may take it.

She payd for her apartment in advance and supost to move in imediately after arrival to NY at 8am.
The owner of the unit toke the money, but resist to leave the unit until 8 pm, living my customer with 6 suitcases on the cold street on Manhattan.
I rent the hotel room, so she can relax and warm up a little.  She moved in to the apartment next morning and asked for the refund for that day. Owner refused to don that, becouse he thinks 8pm is not to late, and day is not over yet.
However, he is in Israel right now, cashing his checks. I am listening my clients complains and tryed to work it out....

Welcome to the Writing for Professionals class!

I designed this blog, so you can share and comment on your written work.  Please post your assignment each week, read and give constructive feedback on others' work as often as you want.  For this week, you have to write an email.

Ideally, the person who gets the feedback should take the comments into consideration and revise their work before submitting a final draft to me.  In order for this to happen, it is preferable that you submit your papers each week by Saturday, so you can have enough time to read your classmates' work.

Finally, this is a place to learn, please do not worry about making mistakes.
