Week One Assignment - Email

K,

Attached are job descriptions for Communications Associate, Policy/Advocacy Associate, and Intern positions for GHS’ office in Beijing. When Feng was in NY last week, he had discussions with David and Victor about hiring for these positions and there was agreement to move ahead. Although the hiring will take place in Beijing, it would be great to get your thoughts on the position descriptions and recruitment.

There are a few things that Feng had flagged out before we started developing,

·         Degree requirement: Though we only ask for Bachelor’s degree for Associate at New York office, given the quite different higher education system, Feng and I feel requiring for Master’s degree would apply better to the context in China. And accordingly, I reduced the requirement for work experience to 1-2 years.

·         English Proficiency: As a test to the applicant’s English Proficiency, we won’t translate the job description into Chinese, and we will ask for a relatively long writing sample (3-5 page).

·         Standardized Test Score (English Proficiency): Feng and I have been discussing whether or not to ask the applicants to optionally include any scores they have received from those internationally acknowledged standardized English test scores, e.g. TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). Do you think this is a good idea? (I’ve included background about the tests below.)

Please let me know how you think. We could also set up a time to discuss it in details.

Thanks!
Beisi

·         TOEFL iBT: it is the internet-based TOEFL. It is still TOEFL but with difference scoring system, and people nowadays take this one instead of the traditional paper-based TOEFL. It is required for people who are applying for higher education in the U.S., Canada, and other English-speaking countries.
·         IELTS: the UK equivalence.
·         TOEIC: it is for workplace English communication specifically. So it is not as widely taken as TOEFL or IELTS, but people who are interested in jobs with international organizations may take it.
